Sciatica
The sciatic nerve runs through the gluteal muscles then down the leg. Sciatica refers to any irritation to that nerve, both physical or chemical. This often comes from the piriformis muscle and can run hand in hand with piriformis syndrome. Sciatica is often used as a catch-all term for all symptoms that travel down the leg. It is common among runners, people who sit for work, and males who sit on their wallets. Sciatica rarely occurs on its own and is typically a symptom of an underlying issue or dysfunction. Patients with sciatica often experience numbness, tingling or even weakness down their leg. Pain often feels like a sharp jolt that shoots down the leg.
Management for sciatica includes stretching and manual release of the piriformis along with correcting the underlying dysfunction. Rehabilitation exercises will often be aimed at central stability, hip extension and hip range of motion. Some patients who have a corresponding loss of a longitudinal arch in the foot and can benefit from orthotics.
